Come

This is a very easy trick to teach.

All you do is say your ratties name and then the word "come" or "come here", and at the same time coax your rat towards you an inch or so, using a treat. After they take a couple steps towards you, reward them immediately with the treat saying "good rat" in a positive tone. After that, you can praise them, and pet them, and tell them what a wonderful job they did. (Be sure to say the exact same phrase every time you want them to come to you. You need to be consistent!)

Simply keep doing the above technique, widening the distance a little more each time. Pretty soon you will be able to stand on one side of the room, and call your rat over from the other.

We recommend using Coco Rice Krispies as the treat reward because they are quick to eat and also low in fat.

It is a good idea to not use this trick to put your rats back in their cage after play time is over, or to give them medicine. If they associate the fact that when they come when called, something unpleasant will happen, they might stop coming.

(This is an important trick to teach your rats for safety if they escape.)
