You can do this by teaching them tricks throughout their lives, keeping them in a constant learning mode. It's like school for their brain. Another way to challenge their minds, is to give them puzzles to solve. The best way to encourage them to solve a puzzle is to use treats as the payoff. Treat dispensers make excellent puzzles to figure out. You can also completely seal their treats inside of small containers which they would need to figure out how to get open to reach their bounty. You could use small boxes, candy containers, tiny tupperware, anything that you can seal and is safe for your rats to chew on. Another challenge is to place treats in difficult to reach locations, such as hanging from the end of a string.
