Cage Ware Manufacturing - $400 plus shipping ![]() RattyRat's Review: This is our rats' giant palace! The cage itself measures 6' tall by 4' wide by 2' deep, and has three levels. It is made out of 1/2" by 3/4" wire mesh. This guarantees that even a tiny four week old baby can't squeeze out through the bars. The ramps are made out of 1/2" by 1/2" sized mesh. This prevents their little feet from falling through, getting caught, and possibly becoming broken. Each level has a solid floor (to prevent sore feet), with a 4" lip surrounding them to help prevent litter from being kicked out. The cage has three giant doors, one to each level, making the inside of the cage easily accessible. The entire cage is powder coated, making it safe for the rats to chew on, not to mention easy to clean. We cover all the floors with litter, which is very easy to scoop out using a dust pan as it gets dirty. We clean the whole thing out once a week, scrubbing it from top to bottom with disinfectant, at the same time disinfecting all their toys and cage accessories in the bath tub. This cage was custom built by Sierra Manufacturing. Which no longer exists. The company turned into Ware Manufacturing and we are not sure if they will still do custom made cages. However, you don't have to use the internet to have a cage made. Save yourself a fortune in shipping, and find someone locally who can do it for you. Look in the phone book under "metal workers" and "metal finishers". This cage is very safe, and easy to clean. We highly recommend it's design. However... ... after putting it through it's paces, we would recommend a couple minor changes... The first change we'd recommend, is to put a 6" lip around all the cage levels as opposed to a 4" lip. 4" just wasn't tall enough to keep the litter from being kicked out onto the floor. The next thing we would recommend is to have all three levels made as complete full length levels. We chose to make the top level of this cage a half length level because we wanted the extra space to put in taller branches, toys, and ropes for lots of climbing fun. What we didn't take into consideration, though, was the dangers that this provided. Especially for our weaker elderly rats. If one of our rats takes a miss step, they run the risk of falling a loooong way down and injuring themselves. To solve this issue with our cage, we've made the half level into a whole level by hanging a floor made out of linoleum. We would also recommend bringing the three levels closer together. Ours are spaced two feet apart. We would actually recommend going one and a half feet apart instead. Again to make it safer for your older rats. We have found that the extra half foot is just wasted space anyway. Our cage is a dream to clean, but the one thing we didn't think of, is putting lips around the ramp openings to each level. Because of this, litter falls through the openings, leaving a diameter of bare cage floor around the ramp tops. We've tried to prevent this by putting climbing toys in front of the holes to stop the litter from falling through, but it's kind of a pain. So we would recommend putting a two inch lip around each ramp opening. Follow all this advice to make your own custom cage, and you will end up with a cage that will make you happy for the rest of your life! Just think about all those ratties you will have though out the years. What a wonderful home this would give them! ![]() |
