Digging Drawer

RattyRat's Review: Rats love to dig, and some form of digging box always makes a great toy for them. The only problem is that while they dig, they can make a huge mess! To try and combat this, we decided to turn a plastic organization drawer into our rat's digging box. By it being mostly enclosed, the dirt stays in the box, instead of all over our floor, (mostly). We filled the drawer a little over halfway full with top soil (it needs to be plain dirt with no added chemicals/fertilizers. The dirt in the picture is the wrong kind of dirt to use) We keep the drawer only open about two inches, giving the rats a point of entry, but only leaving a small space that dirt could get kicked out. Once we showed them how to get in, they had a blast. They love the confinement and dark environment because it reminds them of a burrow. You could also use a glass fish tank, as these work very well too. Just don't fill it to the top. Only fill it half to three quarters of the way full. You can buy a bird ladder to give them access to the tank. What ever you end up using as a digging box be sure to put a stone or ceramic tile in there, somewhere on the surface. Rats like to dig underneath things and this will encourage them to dig. For added fun, burry treats or other objects in the dirt for them to find. Make sure it is something that won't get spoiled by the dirt. Rat's have much more fun with digging boxes if they have something to dig up.
