Finding a Location For Your Rats' Enclosure

Choosing the best location for your rat's home can sometimes be a difficult one.

Consider The Following...

You want to pick the best room in the house where you have the most control over the temperature. The more consistent you can keep the temperature in your rats' enclosure throughout the year, the better it is for your rats' health, by leaps and bounds! Ideally the temperature should be kept between 70 and 75 degrees.

Generally speaking, a dimly lit, quiet environment is best for your rats' enclosure.

Do not put your rats' enclosure next to a loud TV/stereo or noisy appliance.

Do not put your rats' enclosure in front of a window (drafts and direct sun can be harmful), don't put their enclosure right next to a heater (the heat would be too extreme), and don't put their enclosure right next to an air conditioner (the cold would be too extreme.)

Keep toxic smells away from your rats, such as cleaning chemicals, and cigarette smoke.

The best humidity for your rats is at 50%. If their environment is too dry, it can cause dry skin, and dry environments can make respiratory infections worse.

It is convenient to have your rats' home located in their "rat proof" play area if possible. Then you won't have to deal with hauling their enclosure back and forth.

You will also want your rats' home to be out of harms way so that other household animals don't have access to it.
